Resolved Question: Does military receive discounts from airlines when called in?

My family is new to the army and we are planning our vacation out in 2010. The subject of airfare was brought up in a conversation with a neighbor. She told me that I should never buy my tickets online. I am supposed to have my husband call in to the airline, and they will give him a very good discount because he is military. I would ask my neighbor again to give me more exact information on the subject, but she moved. My questions are: Is it just my husband or the whole family? Does it apply to vacations with proof that he has the approved paperwork to take leave? Is there some place on our base in which I could get discount flight tickets? more

Resolved Question: What is the problem with the staff at American Airlines?

In September, my wife and I took American Airlines for our honeymoon (big mistake) We live in Chicago, so we had to gto Chicago-Dallas, and then Dallas-Puerto Vallarta. Then coming home of course was the reverse order. Anyway on the Dallas-Puerto Vallarta part, the came around with the beverage card and I got my drink. Then later in the flight I grabbed the flight attendants attention and asked for some water, and she repeated back to me 'you want some water", like I was from another planet. When I think they should be ASKING ME, if I want anything else. Coming home was the same BS, came once with the beverage cart, and never bothered to ask if I was wanted anything else. Not to mention at the Gate in Dallas when trying to come back to Chicago, I asked the gate agent about upgrades and she gave me an attitude saying I can't upgrade a discount ticket unless I was Elite or Gold status. But anyway, seriously, on American, do I have to start hitting the call button every ten minuted to get better service? I'm seriously thinking about calling them, and telling them that I want to withdraw from the AAdvantage program. more

Resolved Question: Question - Are there any REAL last minute travel web sites ?

Talk about LAST MINUTE (LOL) - we were thinking of just going for 3-4 days to Vegas over thanksgiving holiday - I realize everything is pretty well booked up (flights and alot of hotels) - BUT - does anyone know of a REAL valid last-minute travel web site that truly finds unused airline seats and unbooked hotel rooms ? I have fiddled with Travelocity and some others which have "last minute deals" but honestly I am getting the SAME prices for flights/hotels as I did when I looked at the trip costs several weeks ago - so I don't see any discounts as they advertise 70% off and such. Any suggestions on search engines for last minute travel ? Thank you !! more

Resolved Question: Did Collins software integration effort resemble Aeroflot Flight 593 ?

Aeroflot Flight 593, a "Russian Airlines"[1] Airbus A310-304 passenger airliner, registration F-OGQS, operating on behalf of Aeroflot, crashed into a hillside in Siberia on 23 March 1994. All 75 passengers and crew were killed. Voice and flight data recorders revealed that the pilot's 15-year-old son Eldar Kudrinsky, while seated at the controls, had unknowingly disabled the A310's autopilot's control of the ailerons, which put the aircraft into a steep bank, and then an uncontrolled dive. The pilots were not aware of the partial disconnection of the autopilot, which occurred with no audible alarm, and did not regain control of the aircraft. The jet was en route from Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) to Hong Kong's former Hong Kong International Airport (Kai Tak Airport). Most of the passengers were businessmen from Hong Kong and Taiwan who were looking for economic opportunities in Russia. The relief pilot, Yaroslav Kudrinsky (Ярослав Кудринский), was taking his two children on their first international flight and they were brought to the cockpit while he was on duty. Aeroflot allowed families of pilots to travel at a discounted rate once per year. With the autopilot active, Kudrinsky, against regulations, offered to let them sit at the controls. First his daughter Yana took the pilot's left front seat. Kudrinsky adjusted the autopilot's heading to give her the impression that she was turning the plane, though she actually had no control of the aircraft. Next, his son Eldar Kudrinsky (Эльдар Кудринский) took the pilot's seat. Unlike his sister, Eldar applied enough force to the control column to contradict the autopilot for 30 seconds. What nobody knew was that by doing this, he completely disconnected the aileron's autopilot: the flight computer switched the plane's ailerons to manual control while maintaining control over the other flight systems. The plane did not audibly signal a warning that this had occurred, although an indicator light did come on. It apparently went unnoticed by the pilots, who had previously flown planes with an audible warning signal. The first to notice a problem was Eldar, who observed that the plane was banking right. Shortly after, the flight path indicator changed to show the new flight path of the aircraft as it turned. Since the turn was continuous, the resulting predicted flight path drawn on screen was a 180 degree turn. This indication is similar to the indications shown when in a holding pattern, where a 180 degree turn is intentional to remain in one place. This confused the pilots for nine seconds. Soon the plane banked past a 45-degree angle (steeper than it was designed for). This increased the g-force on the pilots and crew, making their bodies feel much heavier than usual, and making it impossible for the Captain to replace his son at the controls. After banking as much as 90 degrees, the remaining functions of the autopilot tried to correct the plane's altitude by putting the plane in an almost vertical ascent, nearly stalling the plane. The co-pilot and Eldar managed to get the plane into a nosedive, which reduced the G-force on the pilots and enabled the Captain to take the controls. Though he and his co-pilot did regain control, their altitude by then was too low to recover, and the plane crashed at high speed, killing all aboard. Families of western victims placed flowers on the crash site, while families of ethnic Chinese victims scattered pieces of paper with messages written on them around the crash site. more

Resolved Question: Cheap flights from Canada/UK to Thailand/Malaysia?

I need to get to Kuala Lumpur just before Christmas and return to Canada (Toronto) in early January, but I am awful at finding cheap flights. I actually have a one way flight to the UK around that time so could fly from the UK to Malaysia, or fly directly from Canada, whichever may be cheaper. I could also possibly fly to Thailand or Singapore and get a cheap flights from there to KL. Does anybody know of any good, cheap airlines that fly to and from these places, or of any discounts that are available? At the moment the cheapest return flight I can find from Canada to Malaysia is about $3000CAD, which seems insane. more

Voting Question: Why does a perfectly competitive market require many participants as both buyers and sellers?

please help. i cant find these answers. thanks:) 1. Why does a perfectly competitive market require many participants as both buyers and sellers? because the merchandise must be uniform so that no individual can control the price in order to maintain quality over the goods so that both buyer and seller have the same information 2. Which of the following is characteristic of a competitive market? high costs low output inexhaustible supply efficiency 3. A natural monopoly is any situation in which only a single seller is allowed to exist. a monopoly in which the goods produced are agricultural resources. an industry that runs best when one firm produces all the output. an industry in which the government provides all the output. 4. A discounted airline fare is a price discrimination that can be offered because people do not necessarily want to go where the discounts will allow them to go. vacationers are willing to put up with the restrictions that the airlines impose. people who fly on business want the price discounts but do not qualify. senior citizens qualify for discounts on certain types of flights but not on others. more

Resolved Question: Air travel question ?

Guess the "travel" time from JFK (New York) to Perth, Australia if you book it the long route? (answer below)... My wife Dot and I are starting a Home Travel Agency. We are joining a very large outfit that deals with folks like us who want a home business. I used to work for TWA (Trans World Airlines) 25 years. Before they were sold to American. My job was International reservations for flights, tours, and cars. One day I was playing around with the computer and (at the time) found 25 different airfares between New York City and Los Angeles. Reason being a person can naturally fly non-stop or change flights thru many-many different cities (called "connecting" flights). You can also combine 2 different discount fares and fly "back to back" (Let's use a make believe fare for an example) Let's say a normal coach ticket New York to Los Angeles is $500. But, if we combine a New York "discount" $150 route to St. Louis, Mo. (change our own bag's or better yet have a small carry on bag) and pick up a $200 St. Louis to Los Angeles trip. Yea-yea I know some of you are saying, "Hey, blah-blah-blah !!!" OKAY GANG how about the person who flys "EVERYWEEK" ??? Or every 2 weeks? Let's say Mr. Fly-every-week work's that job for 20 years ? Hey kid's... NOW WE'ER TALKING $156,000 OF OUR PRETEND MONEY GOING DOWN THE DRAIN !!!!! All of you can call the airlines and get real money if you want. My point is, I just want to show you folks how to save money. Yes, sometimes fares are around for a short period of time. One time TWA had a $33 special St. Louis to Chicago one way for about a month. Now I'm not supposed to ask for your business here in Yahoo Answers... BUT... I can help a "new" friend with travel information if he or she has an up and coming trip they need help with. My e-mail address is attached to this... what ever it is. All I need is your dates of travel to & from and a list of towns your going to with how much time at each stop. I figure if I can help make your trip a bit better thats half the game won. Your going to find as you call around to different airlines and travel agents (say maybe 10 or 15 or so) your going to feel like you just dug a hole 30' x 50' and 20' deep in your back yard. Some of those agent's can really mess up your head !!!! (Phew-phew !!) >>>> The answer to the question on top is... 39 hours 55 minutes ! As I used to say (almost 95+ times a day) "Thank You for calling TWA, my name is Tom" more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know of an airline that offers help/compensation to passengers for weather-related cancellations?

I recently had a hellish experience while flying U.S. Airways due to a flight that was cancelled because of bad weather. I know airlines can't help the weather, but I was wondering if anyone knows of one that goes out of their way to take care of stranded passengers. I had to sleep on a bench in the Philadelphia airport and wait almost 24 hours to get home due to the delay with no food vouchers and no offer of a hotel stay or discount. The staff was also extremely rude. Do any other airlines do a better job? Or is the general policy for passengers stranded due to weather basically a hearty "screw you"? more

Resolved Question: Can I get a job in an airport?

I live in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada where there is an international airport. I recently graduated from high school and am growing tired of my current customer service job as they are not giving me regular hours and I was never trained properly. I would have no problem working night shifts or morning shifts on the days where it is possible as I will be stating university in September. The main reason for wanting to get a job at an airport (Preferably with some airline) is to get some form of flight benefits, be it free flights, or discounted flights. If this is the case i would have no issue with working for minimum wage if that is the case. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: QUESTION FOR FAs: How usefull is fluency in Russian if i want to be a Flight Attendant?

Hi I've been thinking of becomming a flight attendant. Im fluent in Russian and English (haha obv) but according to my research airlines don't care much for Russian because they don't fly there. The websites i've been visiting say that the most usefull foreign languages are French, Spanish, Italian, German, Chinese or Japanese. ...so my plan is to go to college, get a degree in Socioogy and Political Science and a foreign language (im thinking French or Spanish). ...what do you think. is that a good plan? am i likely to get hired? will my Russian help in any way? Can i fly internationaly with just English and Russian as my languages? (haha cuz i'm too lazy to learn another language) And i keep hearing that a huge downside to the job is the low wage (especially as you're starting out). So, would it be possible for me to live in NYC on a newby FA salary??? (because i want to go to college in NYC and stay there simply because it's objectively the best city ... ever... =) also, do FAs keep their airline usage discounts after they quit being FAs? and another question: What do you, FAs do in your time off from work? Do you work a second job? Or do you just chill for like 2 weeks??? And, this might be a stupid question, but is it harder to meet people / make friends since you're always flying? Are you good friends with your crew? ...like do you hang out in your free time or do you get totaly sick of each other?????? THE MORE DETAILED AN ANSWER U GIVE, THE MORE I E-HEART U!!! more

Resolved Question: Discount air travel to the carribean?

I'm looking to travel to Turks and Caicos (hopefully) next May for my wedding. All the flights I'm finding are running about $1500 for a couple, and I was wondering if anyone know's of any perferred airlines that I can search to find some reasonable flights there. I don't want to hear about priceline, orbitz, hotwire and the sort I know about all of them and can do those searches. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Would this be considered as a threat?

I recently booked an international flight for my son through an internet discount airfare company. Yesterday, my son realized that he will not receive his passport in time for the departure on Sunday, June 21st and called the company to change his departure date to either June 24th or June 25th. The eticket he received states that airline penalties and a processing fee by the company will be charged in the event of changes. The company told my son the airline penalties would be $247.00 and the company fee would be $100.00 -- but then they placed him on hold and returned to tell him his ticket would cost an additional $5,000.00. My son was terribly upset, hung up and called me. I immediately called the company, was on hold for 45 minutes before speaking with a customer representative. When I tried to change the departure date, I was told the airline penalties would be $350.00 and the processing fee would be $100.00. The customer rep placed me on hold for 5 minutes, then returned and told me there would be an additional charge of $7,000.00. I read to her the statement on the eticket about changes, we argued about this for a little bit, then I insisted on speaking with her supervisor. Again, went through the same ordeal with the supervisor. It was difficult to understand the supervisor and the customer rep -- they are with a call center in India. I am preparing to call the toll free number now, hopefully talk with someone in the U.S.. This morning, I have investigated this company's practices and discovered it is fraud. My question is if I tell customer service that I am prepared to file charges and complaints with all authorities if this cannot be resolved reasonably, will my statement be considered a threat? more
