Voting Question: What's the structure of this poem?
What's the structure of The Bystander by Rosemary Dobson? I am the one who looks the other way, In any painting you may see me stand Rapt at the sky, a bird, an angel’s wing, While others kneel, present the myrrh, receive The benediction from the radiant hand. I hold the horses while the knights dismount And draw their swords to fight the battle out; Or else in dim perspective you may see My distant figure on the mountain road When in the plains the hosts are put to rout. I am the silly soul who looks too late, The dullard dreaming, second from the right. I hang upon the crowd, but do not mark (cap over eyes) the slaughtered Innocents, Or Icarus, his downward-plunging flight. Once in a garden – back view only there – How well the painter placed me, stroke on stroke, Yet scarcely seen among the flowers and grass – I heard a voice say, ‘Eat,’ and would have turned – I often wonder who it was that spoke. moreResolved Question: "Man in Flight" coin collection 1995. whats the worth?

If you were somewhere back in time and met the trooper, while on the flight 666, which witnessed the Flight of Icarus at 2 minutes to midnight,in the brave new world where some bare the number of the beast, what would you do? It's actually a verse, but I consider poetry an influence... so thoughts? Every women’s a princess, but she’s my queen I love her in all tenses, like love only seen in dreams I just hope our work in the end won’t be wasteful I threw away my halo and god sent me an angel Not one in lust but one that constitutes romance When our eyes touch it’s more not just to hold hands It’s like she looks deeper reading my inner soul Inside I can she her seeking the inner most My hearts in her hand peaking through finger folds Stripped off innocence leaving saint felt clothes That is what my angel holds, I’m light headed So confined we use the Icarus flight method To where our life’s heading I just hope our time’s etched in With the same amount of love together And I’ll say without doubt I want forever moreResolved Question: Is This A Good Collection?

The Noble “Sacrifice” of Michelle Obama; Update: Chicago & Tokyo Eliminated; Games over, Prepare for Recriminations; It’s Rio By Michelle Malkin • October 2, 2009 09:15 AM Scroll for updates…And the winner is…Rio (Photoshop: Reader Ben) My column commemorates the noble Olympic “sacrifice” of the First Lady in Denmark. Mrs. O’s emotional pitch was supposed to bring tears to the eyes of the audience, according to crony White House Olympics cheerleader Valerie Jarrett. Chicagoans are no doubt shedding tears — over the ballooning costs of a potential win. Allahpundit has the lowdown on the president’s schlocky pitch. Update: 11:34am Eastern. Chicago and Tokyo eliminated. No Obamalympics. Hey, can we close the White House Olympic Czar’s office now? Oh, well: “Chicago counts on Obama oratory to seal 2016 Games.” Goodbye, “Yes We Can.” Hello, “No, You Can’t.” Like Icarus, President Obama’s giddy ego flight has ended with melted wax and fallen wings. This is a big win and a massive relief for taxpayers. But Chicago cronies are not going to take this well. Gird your loins. Who will be first to cry RAAAAAACIST? Well, it will be a little awkward to play the race card after liberal critics of the Games filed a civil rights complaint against the Chicago 2016 committee for racial discrimination yesterday. But count on the Team Obama grievance-mongers to play it anyway. Update 12:08pm Eastern: Video – CNN anchor sputters, “CHICAGO IS OUT? CHICAGO IS OUT?” Update 12:23pm Eastern: Chicago crony White House adviser David Axelrod just now on Fox: “Life goes on.” Axelrod complaining about “relationships and politics that were formidable. And we couldn’t overcome that.” On Twitter, Tony Gall sums it up: “Chicago cronies out-cronied by IOC cronies.” Beaten by their own game. Update 12:52pm Eastern. Congratulations, Rio: Inevitable cost overruns, massive sports palaces & graft galore are all yours! *** The noble “sacrifice” of Michelle Obama by Michelle Malkin Creators Syndicate Copyright 2009 It’s hard out there for a First Lady of the United States. Take it from travel-weary Michelle Obama. On Tuesday night, she boarded a luxury 757 for Copenhagen. Think of the stairs she had to climb. Oh, the agony of the feet! Upon arrival, Mrs. O, her “chit-chat buddy,” Chicago-based talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, and Chicago power-broker/interest-conflicted real estate mogul/senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett immediately embarked on a grueling, grip-and-grin campaign to secure the Olympics for their hometown. Our smile muscles ache in sympathy. You will be comforted to know that gracious FLOTUS feels your pain for her pain. “As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days,” the First Lady told a group of fellow Chicago 2016 boosters, “so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home.” Translation: Thank me, thank you, for all we do. Never has self-congratulatory gratitude been raised to such an art form, but there was no time for loyal subjects to dwell. The selflessly indefatigable Michelle Obama had to rush off for an 800-meter wine-and-cheese dash with International Olympic Committee members, followed by a rigorous aerobic Heads of State luncheon hosted by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and another high-heeled trek to the IOC Opening Ceremony at the Copenhagen Opera House. Of course, it’s not entirely clear which “people” out there are saying that the Obamas’ jaunt to Denmark is a “sacrifice.” Certainly not the families of 43 American soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have died in Afghanistan since General Stanley McChrystal called for more reinforcements. Certainly not the families of nearly 40 children and teens in Chicago who lost their lives on the out-of-control streets of the Windy City so far this year. The First Lady’s slip of self-absorption reminds me of a useful passage in Washington Post writer Liza Mundy’s biography of Mrs. Obama. After graduating from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, the bitterly oppressed Michelle Obama headed back to her native Chicago to join the high-powered law firm of Sidley Austin—the fifth-largest in the world. There, Mundy’s book reported, the future first Lady griped about having to do the duties of a second-year associate while she was a second-year associate—demonstrating the trademark attitude of entitlement and inflated ego that led the law partner who recruited her to later describe her as “perennially dissatisfied.” Doing her first job was a burden then. Enjoying the perks of her current job are “sacrifice” now. Mrs. Obama has a gift for selling special-interest business as usual as public-interest charity. Thus, the insatiable appetite of the Chicago polite elite for a massive Olympics windfall to crony developers is redefined as a do-good campaign For the Children. Said Mrs. Obama moreVoting Question: can someone analyze this poem?
"Burning Dreams on the Sun" Were there too many turnaround loads, distance measured by all night diners, hours yawning through too much coffee, kidneys throbbing again at 3 a.m.? Were there too many nights on your hands that hung like chains from the wheel, monotonous, humdrum motion droning away the sound of your dream? And did the darkness ever whisper, it might not work, it might not nearly grounding you in mortal shame, too foolish ever to dream again? Icarus, too, must have felt like you, restless with impudent wonder. No labyrinth could hold him; he flew on wings of feathers and wax until he burned his dreams on the sun But no matter. For a time, you dared to leave the darkful land, rising high in wacky flight like an uncouth god, purified by light moreResolved Question: who is the author of "the flight of icarus"?

the smoke in my bedroom which is always burning worsens you, motorcycle Icarus; you are black and leathery and lean and you cannot distinguish between sex and nicotine anytime; it's all one thing for you - cigarette, phallus, sacrifical fire - all part of the grimy flight on wings axlegreased from Toronto to Buffalo for the secret beer over the border - now I long to see you full blown and blak over Niagara, your byke burning and in full flame and twisting and pivoting over Niagara and falling finally into Niagara, and tourists coming to see your black leather wings hiss and swirl in the steaming current - now I long to give up cigarettes and change the sheets on my carboniferous bed; O baby, what Hell to be Greek in this country - without wings but burning anyway. I have to summarize some Greek myths. I tried looking for a list online, but no avail. I cannot summarize the following myths, my teacher says we cannot because we have already read them in class: ~Echo and Narcissus ~The Flight of Icarus ~Heracles (Hercules) ~King Midas and the Golden Touch (It is a myth because Dionysus is the god that gives King Midas the Golden Touch) ~The Origin of the Seasons (the one myth where Demeter's daughter Persephone is captured by Hades..also explains the Origin of the changing seasons) ~Orpheus and Eurydice ~Arachne ~Medusa Can you also list links showing the FULL actual myth instead of sites that only list information or a brief summary on the myth. Thus he schooled his son, While fastening the strange equipment on. so i reserched Helice and found that: HelIas = nothern bear = (callisto?) loved by zeus turned into she bear by hera daughtr of lycaon referd demeter to helios maybe daughter of olenus maybe brought up zeus so she is Ursa Major basically.. so in following these constellations they sort of pointed twords Cepheus.. and since Cepheus is king maybe they are referring to this when they say "look to your leader"? im just very curious.. anything having to do with the Labyrinth and King Minos and The Minotar and Bulls and The Minoions and how this relates to Taurus, i find really interesting right now.. what is your thoughts on these myths yall? do you think maybe the Labyrinth is reality? if so im not ready to go.. so is this saying that becoming a king is the way out of the Labyrinth? or what? who is Icarus's leader? they are running from King Minos (flying).. so who is this leader his dad spoke of? a king makes sence to me.. cause they are considered to be in the middle of the realms.. so maybe he just saying to go to a different kingdom? but then why did he allready call him his Leader? maybe this is referring to a Shepherd? i think Taurus used to be a sign of the Shepherd.. can anyone give me any info on this? moreResolved Question: english help please.....?
The myth of "Icarus" alludes to a Classical Greek myth. Icarus was supposedly the young son of Daedelus, a brilliant inventor who invented wings for himself and his son to escape from an island prison. The wings worked, and father and son flew off the island towards freedom. As they flew, the father warned Icarus not to fly too closely to the sun, since the heat of the sun would melt the wax structures of the wings. However, as Daedelus dozed in flight, young Icarus became so exhilarated with the novelty of flight that he forgot his father's warning. He flew higher and higher until the sun melted his wings. They slipped off, and he fell into the ocean and drowned. Daedelus awoke just in time to see and hear his son fall into the ocean. Poetic Terms: Diction: the author’s choice of words to convey a particular meaning. Imagery: the use of words that appeal to the senses. Irony: the contrast between expectation and reality. 1. How does the painting depict the fall of Icarus? The official title is Landscape (with the fall of Icarus). Does it seem unusual to title a painting this way and then spend so little attention on the "main" character? Why? What point is the painter making with this depiction? 2. What did the “Old Masters” understand about suffering? What do the contrasting examples in the stanza seem to suggest about the “human position” of suffering? 3. According to the speaker how does Brueghel’s painting depict the reaction to Icarus’s disaster? Explain, using details from the second stanza. 4. Auden wrote this poem in 1938. He had been a British citizen living in England, who then fled to America shortly before this poem was written. What world events do you think were happening at the time? (Hint: Take a look at his biography page to help or your history class material.) What evidence in the poem shows that these events may have been on Auden's mind as he wrote this poem? 5. In your opinion, why did Auden write this poem? What message do you think he wanted to convery? (Use several reasons to support your answer.) 6. How does Auden use imagery to help convey his ideas about suffering? Give specific examples. 7. In this poem, Auden seems to have deliberately chosen language that is plain, straightforward, even mundane—as when he describes a corner “Where the dogs go on with their doggy life.” This diction or word choice creates an unromantic, unglamorous impression of his subject. Find another example of mundane language in the poem. What effect is created by this choice of language? 8. Think about some national or inter-national tragedy (or pain-filled, momentous victory) that you remember hearing about. Where were you and what were you doing at the time the event was occurring? Where were you and what were you doing when you first heard about it? Did it seem odd to you at the time that your "humdrum" life was going on as usual while this event was happening? Does it seem strange to you now that you think about it? Do you think that most "suffering" -- both tragedies and victories -- tends to happen this way? Why? moreResolved Question: What song is stuck in your head and won't leave you alone?

Here's a poem I wrote, and I know it's not the best, but any suggestions for improvement would be greatly appreciated. It's the last stanza I'm the least content with, and I was debating scratching it all together, but I think that would make the whole thing much less original. And yeah, you won't hurt my feelings if you hate it. Feathers When I was young I would place Feathers in my shirt to make A misshapen bird that I thought Could take flight, Only to leap from my front steps, A plummeting Icarus, Discovering the frantic flapping of my frail arms Would take me nowhere but the concrete ground. I still have feathers, But they are safely tucked Inside my down pillow. The only time I recognize their presence Is when one subtly pricks my cheek, But I quickly pull the lone culprit loose And blow it away, Letting it descend to the floor. moreResolved Question: Iron Maiden songs....?

Were there too many turnaround loads, distance measured by all night diners, hours yawning through too much coffee, kidneys throbbing again at 3 a.m.? Were there too many nights on your hands that hung like chains from the wheel, monotonous, humdrum motion droning away the sound of your dream? And did the darkness ever whisper, it might not work, it might not nearly grounding you in mortal shame, too foolish ever to dream again? Icarus, too, must have felt like you, restless with impudent wonder. No labyrinth could hold him; he flew on wings of feathers and wax until he burned his dreams on the sun But no matter. For a time, you dared to leave the darkful land, rising high in wacky flight like an uncouth god, purified by light moreResolved Question: Good Slipknot and Iron Maiden songs?
