Resolved Question: What would be a better path to follow in order to become a pilot?

Would it be better to go to flight school, go to college or go the military route and join the airforce? I was wondering what it's like being in the military. Resolved Question: Pilot or ATC Dillema?

I'm a freshman at the University of Oklahoma majoring as a Pro. Pilot. I've just finished up my PPL and I've been doing ALOT of research about pilots and their quality of life. Pilots are not paid very well at first and there's alot of risk as to whether or not you'll actually get a good job in the end. I've been considering a career in Air Traffic Control instead due to the fact that I want to be home with family more often and make a comfortable living. I want to make clear though that I absolutely love flying. Not for the glamour of being a pilot but just for the sheer pleasure of completing a smooth flight. I would love to pursue a career as a pilot but I'm beginning to feel as though ATC would be the better route. I know I can earn my pilot ratings anyways. I'd appreciate any advice from someone qualified to answer my concerns (i.e. pilots, air traffic controllers, or ppl with knowledge of the field) Btw, I would also like to spend some time in the military. I would not mind serving a few years at all. Thank you for your help more

Open Question: What is the Best Route to take to see America?

This December [2010] My Fiancee and I are hoping to spend around 4 weeks travelling around some of the major cities in America. As its going to be winter time, christmas/New Year, we were thinking of four big cities...NEW YORK, BOSTON, CHICAGO AND WASHINGTON D.C. TWO BIG QUESTIONS.... Are these places all going to be in the lower temperatures around this time of year [we can only pack suitcases with clothing for either hot or cold weather not both, but fear not, we're going back Summer 2011 for the sun lol] or am I badly misinformed. Secondly, what is the best order to do this in, not in terms of money saving, but in terms of lowering the amount of time spent flying. By this I mean, is it best to go from [A] to [B] or does it not matter either way. I would rather longer flights TO and FROM london rather than lengthy domestic flights. Could anyone please advise on any other major cities which may be of interest to two young(ish! lol) newlyweds looking for a few good photo op's before the kid's come along. Tentatively planning to cover few tourist places in France and Italy from 27th March-4th April. This would be our 1st trip to Italy. Would start from London(27)->Paris(27-29)-> Venice(30)-> [Florence(31)->Pisa(31)->Florence(31)]-> Rome (1-4)->London(4). Would this route be ok? Suggest best alternative itinerary starting from Paris and finishing at Rome.Can we and should we cover these places by trains? Safe? Cheap?? Voting Question: Alaskan cruise May 2010 from Seattle?

My husband and I are considering an Alaskan cruise during his days off in May. (5/22-5/30) We live in NY so we'll have to fly to Seattle. I have Jetblue flights so no need to worry about the cost on that. Which cruise line is best for an Alaskan cruise from Seattle? We're looking for a 7 night cruise. NCL doesn't seem to have a lot of good reviews. Holland seems the best since they've been up north the longest. We're looking to spend as little as possible so we'll be booking an inside stateroom and saving the money for excursions. I've read that the Glacier Bay and the Inside Passage is a MUST SEE and best with a balcony....I guess we'll have to settle with walking out of our room to take pictures. Please explain why the cruise line and/or ship is the best. (Personal experience would be best) Also which route do you recommend from that cruise line? What excursions do you recommend? We love food so the ship with the best food would win us over! How much does it cost to get from Seattle airport to the cruise terminal? Voting Question: Idea for Final Destination 5?

I had this idea for FD5: Its like the movie is set in a city and that it takes place in a very near future like 2020 or so that the city is protected from getting washed off by walls that keep the high sea level from coming in. So my idea is there is this guy (lets just call him Derek) who has a premonition of the sea walls collapsing and the water destroying the entire city. Then when he wakes up he quickly rushes to the sea walls and then the walls start to crack and makes a loud sound that evry1 panics and then Derek stops it just in time (like increasing the pressure in the walls) and then evry1 celebrates but then evry1 starts dying IN GROUPS like in Airplane crashes and Subway derailments and Mall Explosions or even Pile-Ups, referencing the last 4 movies (of course the gore stays =) ). Then in the end Death has start to make deaths that are impossible because Derek keeps intervening deaths but has not enough time to stop other deaths so then in the end Death decides to set down several Tornadoes on the city and everyone dies except Derek and a few others who got to a Boeing 787 just in time and escape the city, narrowly missing tornadoes and debris. THen the ppl on the plane sighs but then Derek sees that the plane number is "180" and there is a poster witht he phrase "This is the end of the line" and then Derek sees visions of The Flight 180 explosions, the deaths, the route 23 pile up, the devils flight roller coaster derailment, the subway derailment, the mckinley speedway incident and then finally he sees a vision with all the survivors who died in the last 4 films (Alex, Clear, BIlly, Carter, Terry, Ms Lewton, Tod, Kimberly, Officer Burke, Rory, Evan, Nora, Tim, Kat, Eugene, Brian, Wendy, Kevin, Ashley and Ashlyn, Lewis, Frankie, Julie, Perry, Ian, Erin, Nick, Lori, Janet, Hunt, The Racist, Andy, George, Nadia, Jonathan and Samantha), staring and surrounding him and then a lightning flashes and during the lightning the survivors in hell has their faces flash their skull and back and vice versa. THen when Derek snaps back to reality, the left side of the 787 blows up in a similar fashion as in Flight 180 and then the plane explodes. Resolved Question: What can I do about this?

Firstly I know why I am like this but can't do anything about it. I think I have Social Anxiety Disorder and depression with symptoms including OCD. I am very timid and scared of meeting new people and when I do I get the ''fight or flight'' defensive action. My face and muscles tensen up and sometimes I sweat and I'm a little hyeractive. I have to repeat actions whilst thinking of a particular colour or I think something bad's going to happen. I am always miserable and crying and I find it difficult to be comfortable or talk to family and friends. Sometimes, I think I'm invisible. Now it get's better.. I think I know the route cause of this mental downward spiral. I cannot talk to my parents about it as I am nearly 24 years old and they are very set in their ways. The fact is I have written a letter explaining this but all I do is edit it and never actually give it to them. I have had to move home after University and so I am currently living with them. The problem is I am gay and although I have written this letter as a New Years resolution, I just can't bring myself to tell them for fear of their reaction or give them this letter. Whenver I try to tell them, I have an adrenalin rush and my mouth moves but nothing comes out. Whenever I try and give them this letter, I take it our of the buro take it within an inch from them and then put it back. My parents were having a conversation last night about how effeminate men were getting. This was the conversation. Dad: ''Was in the gym and men are getting so poofey these days using lynx and hairdryers? Mum: Mm Me: That is not poofey! Most men use lynx. I use lynx (stupid latter thing to say I know!) Mum: Most men in our family use lynx. Even James (Me!) and he's not poofey! Dad: I know! ..but hairdryers are for women! Another conversation that day was again from my Dad and we were watching a Western. Dad: The structure in our society has changed. Now we have gays parading down the streets and all sorts. What on Earth can I do? If I overcome one hurdle, I can overcome them all. How can I do this? My mental state is such that I do not and cannot admit I am gay. So what exactly was gained by this new rule? Furthermore, if someone will try it three hours before landing, will we altogether prohibit blankets from being on planes? Or… will airlines lock and remove all the restrooms and replace them with a few more passenger seats? Implementing these rules, gives the impression that the ability of terrorists carrying out attacks in mid-flight has to do with blankets and bathrooms, and not that authorities ignore the real problem. Namely, that more than most terrorists’ acts are carried out by young men from middle eastern countries, and/or with Muslim names. Resolved Question: as a moroccan national do i need a visa for a connecting flight at Heathrow if i dont leave the airport?

im a moroccan national flying to India. The direct flights are so ridiculously expensive that I am thinking about taking a European flight into London, Heathrow and then connecting to flight to India from there. If I co-ordinate the trip so there is little waiting time between arriving at Heathrow Airport and taking the next flight to India, if I do not leave the Airport, will I still need a visa (for the UK). If I fly through the UK I will save myself around 500 euros rather than flying directly. The problem is that it will, i imagine, be difficult to get a visa (if its needed) for the UK so I will only take this route if I dont need one. Its my understanding that a "transit visa" is only required when you leave the airport (eg, connecting flights are many hours apart or the next flight is from another airport). My rationale is that if I dont pass through immigration to get between terminals, then a visa shouldnt be neccessary. Wishful thinking, or am I right? Many thanks Chi more

Like the plane curves towards the outside of canada and alaska and curves down to land in asia. i have two theories: one is because its actually the shortest distance (due to the natural curvature of Earth) and on a flat map, going straight isnt the shortest. second is that its the safest route in case something happens, land is still nearby and help is closer. can someone please clarify or explain more in detail? im guessing to go to hawaii/australia though, that needs to be straight across the ocean? thanks more

I usually fly into LAX but for some reason I booked a flight into SNA this time around. My flight gets in around noon on Dec 18 and I have to be in West Hollywood in the early afternoon. I looked up taxis and shuttles and they're all about $75-$100 which is fine but was just wondering if there was another way. I also checked out Amtrak and it seems to run somewhat frequently but I am used to our east coast trains running constantly without delay...last time I took Amtrak in the west it was delayed about two hours while waiting for a freight train to go by...so I didn't want to go this route if it's going to be a similar trip. Resolved Question: Why are there no direct flights to India from the West coast?

I think there should be at least one direct flight from either San Francisco, LA or Seattle. Right now you have to travel all the way to New York, Chicago or Newark. That's a needless amount of travel time. Then of course, there's a long trans-Atlantic journey with hours of layover in London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Brussels. By the time you reach India and return the same path, you spent almost 70 hours flying or at the airports. That's like three days of physical and mental exhaustion. It would be far easier and more economical to fly the Pacific route. There should be more airlines to operate a route here. more
