Plane Flight Questions asked

Open Question: Dream Help: Bizarre Flight with a Fight?

I was wondering if someone can help me interpret this strange dream that has been bugging me for quite a while. Usually I don't remember any of my dreams, but this one seem to have stuck with me (why can't I remember the good one instead =_='). Anyway, hope you guys can help (either that, or this will prove I had one too many leftover pizzas that night lol): I was in a commercial airplane with all these people flying to who-knows-where when all of a sudden, the captain comes out of the cockpit, looking quite furious. A bald man, who was sitting in the aisle seat next to me, came out into the aisle looking mad as well. As the rest of the people were chanting "Fight, Fight!" to the two, the bald man brings out of nowhere a very large chalk used to rub on cues for pool and rubs it on his head, making it shiny. He then charges towards the captain like a bull charging towards a torero, but as he does so, the captain takes out of nowhere a frying pan and hits him over the head, knocking him unconscious. The crowd cheers and the captain sits in the seat next to me where the bald man used to be to enjoy the flight, which strangely enough, without anyone else to fly the plane, was flying perfectly fine. more

Open Question: Do we really know what keeps aircraft in the air?

I have a lot of friends in the industry who fancy themselves amateur physicists and claim to understand how a plane stays in the air. But in reality, all we really have is a theory about this, and an UNPROVEN theory at that. Scientists can go on and on about force, flow, lift coefficient, and drag, but again, it's all just theoretical nonsense, not unlike the global warming conspiracy or the theory of evolution. So what does keep planes aloft? It's simple, really: GOD. GOD has given us the miracle of modern flight. I think most pilots tend to take this miracle for granted, assuming other forces are responsible. If GOD didn't do it, why would we call the Miracle of Modern Flight a miracle? Simple, we wouldn't. It's time to lay aside blind belief in science and give thanks to He who so graciously bestowed this boon upon us. We all know who I'm talking about here. In the light of my reflections on this subject, would any of you care to reexamine the speciousness of your "theories"? GOD bless you- Captain Art Griego more

Open Question: Help with naming my story.?

I'm writing a 60-page-long story. It is told from first-person perspective. 28-year-old Karen Wong, the main character, is flying from Seattle to Tahiti for her wedding (she was tying up some ends in the States). During the flight, Karen starts worrying about the wedding. She's not getting cold feet, but parents strongly disapprove due to the fact that the man she's marrying is white and she is Asian-American. When the plane crashes on an uncharted island in the South Pacific, Karen and nine others - Roger, Veronica, Ted, Olivia, Michael, Jennifer, Keith, Elizabeth, and Jason - are the sole survivors. The survivors are fortunate to have a satellite radio, plus a water purifier and GPS locater. They immediately send out signals, but there is no sign of rescue. After a few days, Karen manages to pick up a signal on the radio and hears something horrible. Rescue isn't coming. World War III has broken out between the superpowers and total annihilation is imminent. When the satellite radio cuts to static and ceases to work, the survivors realize that they will be stuck on this island for the rest of their lives. They begin to work together, because they realize that they may be the last survivors of the human race and that splitting up into groups would only cause problems. Well, what do you think? What should I name it? Any suggestions are welcome! more

Open Question: Airplane engine thrust - Powerful enough?

Open Question: Do I have enough time between flights?

Open Question: Are you proud to be a American.?

I got this e-mail and I loved it- I want to pass it to as many people as possible. Please read below: Red Shirt If the red shirt thing is new to you, read below how it went for a man... Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together.. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home. No, he responded. Heading out I asked? No. I'm escorting a soldier home.. Going to pick him up? No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq , I'm taking him home to his family. The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do. Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steely of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steely to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign." Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American. So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do. Red Fridays. Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday. more

Open Question: I'd like to go to flight school, but I have a fear of flying. Any tips for getting over this fear?

I have flown as a passenger a few times in my life and every time it's an absolutely terrifying experience for me. I just keep thinking about what would happen if the plane crashed. The first few times weren't so bad, but the last time I was on a plane I was so scared I cried all throughout takeoff. I've loved watching airplanes in the sky ever since I was a little kid (I grew up next to an airport), and I always think to myself, "I'd love to do that!" I don't want this fear of crashing to get in the way of my dream. What can I do to get over it? Thanks in advance! more

Open Question: Statistics Problem. Please Help!!!?

There is a 4% probability that the plane used for a commercial flight has technical problems, and this causes a delay in the flight. Resolved Question: How do I stop my phobias and anxieties from literally taking over my life? Please Help!?

Please help me! I have like a gazillion phobias & anxieties I'm terrified of everything - flying: I think it might crash, cockroaches, needles, the dark, ghosts/paranormal things, dying, pain, heights, growing old, fire, the dentist, crickets, going in a car because i think it might crash, I'm claustrophobic, I won't go anywhere on my own or if I don't know anyone, scared of going to sleep because I get terrible nightmares ... I could go on and on seriously!! I even get anxious when I pick up the phone! My heart pounds in my throat and I can't breath properly. It doesn't help either that I have asthma which just makes it worse!! Also I'm a terribly hopeless romantic but I'm also scared that if I meet someone in the future he'll end up being a killer or something or he'll just leave me at the alter like you hear about those stories of guys who are all perfect untill you get married and then they'll turn on you. When I see a movie you know how they have the guy and the girl who look into each others eyes when they're about to kiss for the first time and then I think awwww how romantic, then I think how scary it could be and my heart starts pounding. We went overseas two years ago on a huge trip we went to 6 countries and I was fine before that, cause we'd been overseas before and I used to love flying, but then suddenly when they closed the doors I started to freak out! and every little tiny thing that wasn't perfect I freaked out and thought the plane was gonna crash. My tray table was loose once and I thought well what if everything else is loose what if the engine falls of the wing and then the plane crashes and we all die! Also, remember the TWA 800? Apparently these girls were offered a different flight and so they took it and thats the plane that blew up .. well the same thing happened when we left london to go to dubai, the check in guy said do we want to take another flight 1 hour earlier because it was only half full or something so my dad said we would and then I started to freak and think the same thing was gonna happen to our plane! Obviously I got here safe, but I'm scared that because I've been on nearly 20 flights in my life that the next one I go on the plane will crash because the more times you go on a plane the more likely it is to crash. Now my biggest problem of all is my extreme phobia of the dentist! I'm sooo scared of going that if I ever get a toothache or something wrong with my teeth in the future, I just won't go and'll end up having heart disease or something which I'm terrified of that also but my brain just tell's me it won't be as bad as going to the dentist which I know it'll of course be tonnes worse then the dentist but I physically can not go to the dentist. And then I'm scared that I'm gonna get high blood pressure because I keep freaking out about these things and that causes major major stress. I need like a million hypnotherapy lessons or something to cure all these phobias because theyre literally just taking over my life but is there any way I can get over them myself I can't exactly shell out the money for a hypnotherapist because I'm only 18, or if I do end up getting the money for one from somewhere, I'm scared that because I have all these phobias it's too much to cure and I'll be a hopeless case. What do I do to get over my phobias myself, Please please help me!!! This is literally taking over my life and my rationallity. And please no rude answers! more

Resolved Question: Math Help,Can someone help figure this out?

Ohkay,im newly homeschooled and it really isn't my thing at ALL. I'm having a lot of trouble on my math and I can't read the lesson and understand it I have to have someone explain it to me step by step. So if you can please help, thanks! Math: Using Formulas While some word problems are more just a puzzle and interesting to solve, investment, mixture, and distance problems are more practical problems that can be solved using systems of equations. Investors often diversify a portfolio, or invest different amounts of money in stocks, certificates of deposits, and bonds that earn varying interest. Chemists mix solutions in terms of the percentage of active ingredients. Airlines can plan flight times based on normal head and tail winds that affect the rate at which a plane travels, and boats are affected by water current. A formula is used to express the relationships given in some types of word problems. Review the formulas that will be used to write systems of equations in this lesson: Distance = Rate x Time Interest = Principal x Rate x Time Amount of Substance = Percentage x Amount of Solution Perimeter of a Rectangle = 2l + 2w (l = length, w = width) A table will be used to organize the information for some problems in this lesson. The formula will be used to title the columns in the table. Wind and water current affect the rate of planes and boats. Let's say that in still water, having no current, a boat travels 20 miles per hour. Now the boat reaches an area where the water has current that is actually "pushing" the boat. If the water is moving at a rate of 3 miles per hour, then the boat will be moving at 20 + 3 miles per hour. The boat itself does not actually speed up, but the force of the current makes it move at a faster rate. By the same reasoning, airplanes travel faster with the wind and slower against the wind. Example: Traveling with the current, a boat can travel 48 miles in 3 hours. Against the current, it takes 6 hours to go the same distance. Find the rate of the boat in still water and the rate of the current. Solution: Let x = the rate of the boat in still water and y = the rate of the current. Check: The rate with the current is 12 + 4 = 16 mph, and the rate of the boat against the current is 12 - 4 = 8 mph. (3 h)(16 mph) = 48 mi, and (6 h)(8 mph) = 48 mi. The rate of the boat in still water is 12 mph, and the rate of the current is 4 mph. Example: $10,000 is invested for one year at two different rates of 4% and 5% to earn total interest of $470. How much money was invested at each rate? Example: The width of a rectangle is 2 feet less than its length, and the perimeter is 104 feet. Find the length and width of the rectangle. Solution: Let w = the width of the rectangle and l = the length of the rectangle. "The width is 2 feet less than its length," so one equation is w = l - 2. "The perimeter is 104 feet," so another equation is 2l + 2w = 104. Substitute: 2l + 2(l - 2) = 104 2l + 2l - 4 = 104 4l = 108 l = 27 w = l - 2 = 27 - 2 = 25 Check: 2(27) + 2(25) 104 54 + 50 104 104 = 104 The rectangle has a width of 25 feet and a length of 27 feet. Actual Problem: Going against the current, a boat takes 6 hours to make a 120-mile trip. When the boat travels with the current on the return trip, it takes 5 hours. If x = the rate of the boat in still water and y = the rate of the current, which of the following expressions represents the rate of the boat going with the current? Answers: 1) x-y 2) x+y 3) xy more

Open Question: What would you do in this situation?

His request approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go'. The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.' 'Why?' asked the pilot. 'Because I'm a photographer for CNN News,' he responded, 'and I need to get some close up shots.' The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is . . . You're NOT my flight instructor?' . more

Open Question: Why Is There a Moose On This Plane?

I yelped as there was a shudder of turbulence. Flying was a nerve-wracking experience that I had absolutely no control over. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine flocks of birds or maybe a superhero of some description gumming up the engines. Not only would the plane crash, but it would then be a plane full of guilty people shamefacedly commiserating each other that they helped end the world. Flight 572 was the worst one though. Not only did I have to deal with my habitual aviophobia but the people on that flight were the most unsettling I’ve had to contend with on my regular business trips. Some of them had actually been watching the carelessly chosen in-flight movie, Plane Disaster; none of the children were screaming or torturing sweeties out of their parents; No couples had giggled their way to the toilets; none of the impatient rednecks were being unreasonably abusive towards the flight attendants and absolutely nobody was paying any attention to the moose at the front of the cabin! It just kept staring at me, a mysterious mouthful of grass dribbled from its lips as it endlessly chewed. I finally couldn’t take it anymore, I hammered the little button, demanding someone attend to me. Within seconds a female arrived (another unusual occurrence). “How may I help you?” she asked sweetly as sweat travelled into my eye. “Well, I was wondering, I mean I don’t mean to be a bother or anything but– why is there a moose on this plane?” It just kept staring at me, a mysterious mouthful of grass dribbled from its lips as it endlessly chewed. Resolved Question: Do you hate negativism?

I'm declaring war against negativism. I hate it when people try to change the things I do by negativism. This guy named Jerry has his point. When Jerry was planing to go to England, It was a riot of news reporters talking to him about recent terrorist attacks. This one fellow was trying to use negativism on Jerry and ask him this... Reporter: Jerry, with all these terrorist attacks, You are thinking about canceling your flight to England right? Jerry: Now listen, Those terrorist are not going to stop me from going to the UK, I will and can go to any place, any time, I dang well please! If the Pilot, co-pilot, and the staff are willing to risk that... old Jerry will go with them! The reporter was hit with those words off guard, but went again. Reporter: But what if those terrorist blow up the plane? Jerry: Well I got a home in Heaven. Reporter: Then what if those terrorist capture you? Jerry:Boy whats wrong with you, Do you need an answer? I'll get Jackie Johnson to come rescue me! more

now im not a very superstitious person but i am really scared and certain that the plane im on will crash. i have never had such a strong feeling and i keep dreaming about it. this just could be because my last flight which was coming back from new york 2 years ago was my worst flight EVER. we went through a lighting storm, lighting almost struck the plane the turbulence was so severe and my friend had a panic attack and was fainting, being sick in the aisles! and it was night time! now i know this could be why im so scared and it is very unlikely that we will crash and i dont mind the dropping and crashing bit because if it happens it happens. its just the feeling you get and knowing your about to die. i hate to sound so negative but i cannot shake this feeling off! thank you in advance.see i would rescheldule its just its on a art school trip :S and its not a case of growing up i have developed a fear of flying more

Resolved Question: Dog flying in cabin? How?

I only want answers from experienced or knowledgeable people in this subject. I want to fly my Chiuahuah with me when i visit Germany this Summer. i would leave him but the last time I did, he wouldn't eat and sit at the window the whole time. i love my doggie too much to put him through that.I will be gone for three months total. Direct answers would be best appreciated. Thank you! Are there only certain airlines that allow dogs in cabin? Who? How big does the carrier have to be? He has a long neck so he can't strech his neck completely up but it looks comfy to me. What all documentation must I have? Should I buy a muzzle? (He will bite strangers) What are the limits regarding how big the carrier can be? What about connecting flights? Also I will be flying in a small plane at some point both ways so will they allow his carrier in there too? The plane will have two or three lanes at the most. The large plane will of course be huge. more

Open Question: How Would These Lost People Survive Together?

I have been discussing the following story with my Mum and sisters this evening and we all came up with different ideas. What do you think? I really value others opinions. Donna On 31st January 2009 a group of year 11 students left with their teachers for a trip to Barbados to attend the World Youth Forum. The met at Tullamarine( Melbourne Australia) airport for the flight, and despite warnings of rough flying conditions, left on schedule. Eight hours from Melbourne, the plane was hit by freak conditions that destroyed its electrical system. All communication was lost, and with the tail fin torn from the chassis, they were flying off course. The pilot eventually ditched into the ocean. An inflatable life raft was activated, and the pilot, students, two teachers and a tour guide (Peter) scrambled aboard. They had no food or drink. The powerful currents of the Pacific Ocean pushed the raft another 100 kilometers off course until they landed on an uncharted island somewhere off the coast of Tahiti. As they dragged themselves up onto the beach, they were lost, dazed confused and very hungry. The Island was quite fertile with native fruits and berries, and bird life in abundance. The waters were teeming with fish and fresh water could be obtained from a waterhole. This group was destined to spend twelve weeks on the island before being rescued. Q1: How would they survive? Q2: Study the characteristics (Below) of the members of the group; Do you think they would live in harmony? The group consists of: MAX -28 yr old pilot/married/unbeknown to Max he is HIV positive. VICKI -22 yr old teacher/married/18 weeks pregnant/liked by most students. JOSHUA - 44 yr old geologist/unmarried/experienced hiker/homosexual. WALEED - 17 yr old student/class captain/strong academically/devout Muslim AMELIA - 16 yr old student/former girlfriend of Waleed/from a wealthy family. GEORGIA - 16 yr old student/intelligent and articulate/clashes badly with Vicki. LUKE - 17 yr old student/ brilliant artist/ Luke has spina bifida. MOLLY - 16 yr old student/ champion swimmer and diver/ very responsible. STEPHANIE 16 yr old student/Buddhist/quiet and reflective/clashes with Joshua. Resolved Question: Airplane rides are nightmares...?

Just some background info- I am a male teenager, and I have anxiety disorders... Okay... Whenever I ride on a plane, the ride is always a nightmare. During boarding and taxiing, I am always extremely nervous (I actually wet myself a little once), and during takeoff, I feel dizzy, and I worry that I'm going to pass out (but I never do). During the flight, I sometimes get extremely nauseous, but I have never thrown up. Gingerale and deep breathing somewhat help. I don't really think it's motion sickness because I only get nauseous like this on airplanes, not anywhere else. Dramamine completely eliminates the nausea, but it makes me feel terrible in other ways. I get exhausted, but I find it impossible to sleep. It feels awful because I feel extremely tired and out of it, but sleeping is impossible. Finally, I sometimes get panic attacks. I am claustrophobic and afraid of heights, so even without the gastrointestinal symptoms, an airplane isn't my favorite place to be. During the flight I will worry incessantly. The slightest change in my stomach makes me worry I'm about to throw up even if I'm only mildly nauseous, every single change in the plane's pitch makes me dizzy and worry I'm going to pass out, every change in lighting or noise level makes me worry something's wrong with the plane, and I also worry about the possibility of a terrorist attack. Is there anything wrong with me other than anxiety? What can I do about nausea or Dramamine's side effects? What should I do about the anxiety I have? Please help. College is coming soon and I'll have to make cross-country flights by myself...Response to Chris- Thank you for answering, but the worst experience I have ever had on a plane was when a severe wave of nausea hit me after a few seconds of watching a movie, so a DVD player really is out of the question. I appreciate the effort, though.Response to Delandra- I think you're right. I'm going to have to talk to my doctor; anxiety and panic is slowly finding ways to ruin new areas of my life every year. Thanks for your response.Response to Dusk...- Fear of vomiting sounds accurate; I haven't thrown up from nausea in several years because I try to keep it down. I will try your suggestions next time, but as a scientist I have a strong trust in biomedical therapy (drugs). more

Open Question: First air flight since 9/11; First international flight; First time to Asia?

I'm traveling alone and planning a weeklong trip to Singapore then on to the Philippines for 21 days. My intial and final major flying time should be at around 20 hours or more. How many meals should I expect on this plane? Can I bring extra food and drink as carry-on? If so within what size and amount limits? I will also have to take at least one dose of my 21 medications during the course of the flight what is the best way for me to package (pills, insulin, hypos) this as carry on? Should I carry all my medications in carry on in case my luggage is misdirected? I'm a wider person than most (350 lbs) and at times require the use of a cane. What are my chances of obtaining an seat upgrade simply due to my size/health? If not, what would be a good seat selection for me to have space, accomodations to/for my fellow travelers and the ability to stretch my left leg? What are my major expectations in regards to processing through customs/security? I'm not planning anything illegal but would like to avoid being hassled how can I best accomplish this? In regards to standard luggage, trouble sometimes finds me because I look an easy mark though I don't start trouble and do my best to avoid it I believe being prepared is a good motto. I will not carry a firearm to these nations but am certified in the use of an ASP tactical baton (extending baton), mace/pepper spray, and edged weapons. Can I legally bring in and carry on my person any of these type weapons while in Singapore and the Philippines? If so...which? Thank you for your assistance and advice more

Open Question: Can someone review my idea for a Halo 3 Machinima?

Hello. For several years now I have wanted to make my own Halo 3 Machinima series after seeing numerous different ones on YouTube. Now, I have all the needed equipment and am ready to start. However, I am not that much of a creative person, and I have had trouble coming up with ideas. After all of this time, I think I have came up with some decent ideas, but way more terrible ideas. But, one of my scripts that I wrote could possibly be what I choose for my Machinima. I haven't thought much of it at this point, so I don't have any certain characters, a name, or a plot. But here is the General Idea. 2 Warrant Officers are sent on a Search and Destroy mission to find an assassin who has been reported to be responsible for the deaths of multiple important US officials. He is supposedly hiding somewhere in Afghanistan. The 2 soldiers are completely different: one is somewhat of a "not-so-bright" individual, while the other is more serious and angry at times. In the midst of their flight to the Middle-East, their pilot has a heart attack and their plane loses control and crashes into an abandoned Military Outpost (Valhalla). As they crash, they attempt to reconnect with command and armor up. After searching through the abandoned bases, they end up discovering that the interior leads to another place (at this time, unknown. Remember, I haven't planned much). Meanwhile, back at command (Standoff), 2 officers try to figure out what the situation is with the 2 Warrant Officers. After realizing that they crashed, one of the officers, a Colonel, is sent to find them at the crash site. The Colonel takes a squad with him, of 2 others, and leaves to find the 2 others. The general idea of this is that the 2 groups (The Warrant Officers and the Colonel's Squad) go in circles trying to find each other, facing odd challenges along the way. I haven't decided whether to set the tone as Action-Drama or Comedy. By simply reading the summary, you would determine that it would be a drama, however, I could make it a comedy, but it would be a bit of a challenge. So after you have read this, I have two questions, 1.) Do you think that this would pass as a decent Machinima Series? 2.) How should I set the tone (Action-Drama or Comedy)? Thank you for your opinions. more
