I'vee done some reasearch and saw that in the 80's 3 British Airways pilots managed to pull a 747 with no engines a fair distance and managed to land safely with NO glidescope and only could see out of a 2 inch gap down the side of the cockpit windscreen. I've also found out that 2 Air Transat piloits managed toland a fully loaded A330 on a small runway in portugal without any engine power. Another one is when 3 pilots for DHL managed toland a fully loaded cargo plane after a missile damaged the left wing, all hydraulics were lost so they turned the aircraft and decended using only the engines. All these are amazing feats of flying. Please could you tell me a few more and then tell me what airline you think has the best trained pilots. PLEASE FOR THIS YOU CAN'T JUST LOOK AT THE SAFETY LEVEL AS AN AIRLINE LIKE AMERICAN AIRLINES HAS MORE FLIGHTS THAN AN AIRLINE LIKE SOUTHWEST AIRLINES. The rates of on-time flights for commercial jets are continuously tracked by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Recently, Southwest Air had the best rate with 80% of its flights arriving on time. A test is conducted by randomly selecting 20 Southwest flights and observing whether they arrive on time. (a) Find the probability that exactly 5 flights arrive on time. (b) Find the probability that at least 5 flights arrive late. Using Bernoulli Theorem: For (a) I used b(20,5,.8) = .000000166 For (b) I used b(20,5,.2)+b(20,6,.2)+b(20,7,.2)+...+b(20,20,.2) = .1957926 It's telling me that these values are incorrect...so I'm not sure if it's calculation or approach. Ok, I admit I am throwing this out there... I have and LOVE dogs... I am highly allergic to cats and so is my little girl.. SOOOO I get it about pets and people on one hand - but also am very sensistive to the allergen issue with pets as well... I am not biased one way or the other because I do live BOTH worlds.. It's a pain to travel without my dogs.. but - a big BUT - I also would not bring them onto an airplane.. I know too many people who would be bothered by it... even in my own home I am considerate to the needs of those I know with pet sensitivities.. and I make sure we sit outside or I make sure that my dog is in a seperate part of moy house during the visit... Now my question is --- how in the heck can airlines allow pets (even in carriers) in airplane cabins... Sotthwest is now saying they can accept 5 pets (sometimes more) per flight... so does this mean anyone with pet allergies should start brining benadryl onto flights with Southwest? Does this mean if someone has a severe allergic reaction that the airline will be responsible? .. and I wonder, do they notify you or give you a choice as to where your seat will be in relation to pets? Am I the only one seeing how this need to make money (by offering this pet option) can potentially cause a whole slew of other problems.. Isn't this kind of a 'backwards step' as far as air quality on planes go.. we do not get fresh air on planes - its all recirculated.. and even in little pet carriers under seats -- the pet dander will be in the circulated air! Hi, i am planning a trip to the US with my sister. We are doing the following LA to Chicago to New York to New Hampshire to Montreal to Vancouver to Seattle. I am just having a few problems with the leg between New York and Manchester, New Hampshire. Flights don't seem very cost affective and trains just waste a lot of time. I want to figure out a cheap, efficient way of getting from New York to Manchester and then from Manchester to Montreal. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe i am using the wrong airlines. Maybe there are some local, budget ones that you know about. I have checked SouthWest, American, United, Alaskan and Air Canada. For trains i have been all over Amtrak. With Amtrak i would have to go from New York to Boston then Manchester, then back to New York to get to Montreal. Please dont recommend that i go to any zulu or mass searchers because i promise i have gone there, i am looking for some insider knowledge. Hope someone can help. Accommodation has been enough of a pain without having to worry about this one. Everything is so expensive. Thanks everyone.By the way, apologies to everyone. I must have used the mouse scroller and moved from Travel to Military, but hey, you guys are kicking arse at answering the question. I know a car would be best, but with 23 days, car is not too practical and we dont want to spend all our time in a car. It seems that flying out of Manchester is not going to work. It seems like train all the way. Personally, I dont think its worth it, I may try and sway my sister that way too. Thanks all, you have all been gems. Turmoil in the Airline Industry Even before the September 11 terrorist attacks, the major airlines were flying into stiff head winds. Slim to nonexistent profits, bankruptcies and buckets of red ink, poor service, late arrivals, overexpansion, frequent air-traffic control breakdowns, some of the worst labor-management relations in business, high fuel costs, a full-blown economic downturn, and the collapse of business travel had cast this industry into one of the worst periods in aviation history. Road Warriors Get Smart For years, the major airlines had succeeded in getting business travelers (road warriors) to pay premium fares by pampering them with special business-class seats and other perks. Business travel was their lifeblood. Sales of unrestricted fares and last-minute tickets generated about two to three times as much as economy fares and contributed about 70 percent of a major airline?s revenue. But with corporate profits hitting the skids in late 2000, companies put the brakes on travel spending. The corporate exodus hit the major airlines hard. Resourceful business travelers used substitute products such as videoconferencing or other transportation modes ? even if it meant putting up with inconveniences ? to reduce travel expenses. Some turned to the Internet to find cheaper airfares. Others moved their business downstream to discount airlines such as Southwest and Jet Blue. Major airlines tried to raise round-trip leisure tickets to make up for their lost business revenues, but fierce competition from discounters prevented them from doing so. Air Travel is ?Wal-Marted? Just as Wal-Mart did in retailing, the discounters of the air such as Southwest and Jet Blue are squeezing the major airlines from all ends. Low-cost carriers now account for nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic air capacity, up from 6 percent in the early 1990?s. They can afford to sell travel tickets for less because they have many cost advantages over full-service rivals. To begin with, they have younger fleets, which require less maintenance, and younger labor forces that aren?t tied to complicated, inefficient labor contracts. Moreover, low-fare carriers typically fly one airplane model, thus minimizing maintenance, operating, and training costs. By contrast, big carriers typically fly six or seven types of aircraft. And unlike the big guys, the discount airlines don?t operate expensive hub-and-spoke systems. Caught Between a Hub and a Hard Place Using a hub-and-spoke route system, major airlines scoop up traffic from smaller cities (the spokes) and funnel it through a few gathering points (the hub). This practice allows airlines to serve small markets and offer passengers more destinations and more frequent flights. But is also presents a logistical nightmare. It forces major airlines to schedule lots of flights to arrive and depart within narrow windows of time in order to minimize passenger layover times. This means that ground crews, such as gate attendants and baggage handlers, often sit idle between waves of connecting flights. By Contrast, point-to-point carriers, such as Southwest and Jet Blue, schedule flights as if passengers are moving to their final destinations. Instead of having planes and crews sit around and wait for passengers, point-to-point carriers maintain fast-paced schedules, which means minimal downtime for aircraft and fewer personnel on the ground. Turbulent Skies for the Bid Carriers Today, one in four tickets sold is on a discount airline. As pressure from low-fare carriers mounts, major airlines are reevaluating every aspect of their operations. The major carriers are undergoing radical change just to stay in business. They are experimenting with changes in costs, capacity, pricing, and product features in ways they haven?t seriously contemplated since the industry was deregulated in 1978. They are stripping billions of dollars from their operations by revamping their hub system, cutting jobs, eliminating flights, ending food service, and removing first-class seats, and by simplifying their fleets to cut training and maintenance costs, Some are replacing agents with self-service kiosks. Others are wrangling concessions from unions for huge pay cuts to reduce labor costs ? a major differentiating factor when you consider that in 2002 a United Airlines captain earned $9,000 to $11,000 more a month than a Jet Blue captain. Still others, such as U.S. Airways and United Airlines have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize their outstanding debt and lower their operating costs. In spite of their efforts, questions loom as to whether all the major airlines can survive. Even with huge cost cuts, all airlines remain susceptible to possible terrorist attacks, economic turns, or employee unrest. As experts claim that this is just the beginning of an industry-wide shakedown. After all, no airline can fly forever losing billions of dollars. Critical Thinking Questions 1. What s1. I know this a travel question but I want to talk to parents in the know. Unfortunately I can't afford to get my son his own seat and he'll be six months when we go to visit his grands in Arizona. From what I've read the FAA has banned all harness that attach to the seat belt for lap carried infants, period. I figure something is better than nothing, but what can I do? Any suggestions? I'll be travelling on Southwest. And how do you recommend keeping him entertained? It's a three hour flight with an 1 1/2 wait at the airport and the same amount of time to the airport. moreResolved Question: southwest airlines?

Im 16 and im OBSESSED with aviation. Its my life. I live by the airport (KCDC) and they have a school called the National Pilot Academy. I have been planning on going there for a long time. Does anybody know if it would be a good school or if somewhere else would be better? Im looking to get my PPL and ATP and hopefully fly for Southwest, fly cargo, or fly air tankers for fires. Speaking of flying air tankers, how many hours do you need to fly the air tankers and how much experience do you need? Thanks!! moreResolved Question: Probability question?

My boyfriend is going to be visiting me in July for three weeks. He is going from Hawaii (HNL) to Connecticut (BDL). Of course, he didn't listen to me a few months ago when I said to buy his ticket. Rather, he waited until this week to start looking and he's flipping out that the average cost for a round trip ticket is $1200. A few months ago tickets were about $800/$900. So, where is the best place online to find tickets on the cheaper side? I've been trying to look but most prices are about the same. And, what is a decent airline? I've only flown from Connecticut to Florida and back a few times (about a two hour flight) and I've gone on Southwest. I didn't mind them too much, but I was only on the plane for a little while. He's going to be traveling for about a whole day (changing flights twice), and in the air for about 14 hours. Thank you so much for your help. If I can't find a cheap enough flight, he might now be able to visit me until next summer. =( moreResolved Question: I bought tix to Hawaii from Southwest Airlines on ATA planes) has SWA been able to find seats for all affected
I purchased airline tix from Southwest from Oakland to Hawaii in June. The flight/plane is run by ATA airlines- who stopped flying a couple of days ago due to lack of funds. SWA said that the would "accomodate people". There phone rep said that means getting their ticketed passengers on other carriers at no additional charge. Can anyone tell me if they have been successful at getting people, who book tickets from Southwest Air, onto other carriers? Has anyone not been able to get seats? Did they get refunds? moreTop Southwest Air Flights Links
