We grow up in a world filled with celebrities, movie stars, internet, technology, etc. who dramatically impact our lives. Therefore, it can be assumed that all of these play a large role in our dreams and what we want to do with our lives. Look at Hannah Montana for example. How many times have you seen little girls wearing blond wigs and wearing all the Hannah Montana merchandise from Walmart. Some of us believe that if we become famous singers or actors, or spend a lot of time doing charity work, people will give them more respect and look more highly upon them (some colleges require certain amounts of charity work in order for a person to be admitted). So the big question is do we wish to achieve these dreams out of lust and revenge, or in pursuit of our own happiness? Sometimes I wonder if I lived on some remote beach somewhere with no contact from the outside world and free from expectations, would I be happier? I am frightened be her. Seriously, that smile is the most nasty thing ever (most of the time). I'm talking about how Miley Cyrus smiles when shes posing as Hannah Montana. If you look at merchandise like the Hannah Montana 3 CD cover, her smile is God awful nasty. It's like the photographer said "Okay Miley, make the ugliest smile you can make for us." Please no "raise her how you want, it's your daughter" answers. I want honest opinions here. Also, I'm not trying to sound pompous at all, I'm a far cry from the perfect parent. These are just personal examples. I believe that to tell a child "good girl" or "bad girl" shows them to associate the action with a person's self worth. Therefore, if she did something good and I said "good girl", she would think herself a good person for doing so, and a bad person for doing the opposite. Same but reversed for "bad girl". In theory this is fine, but actions have little to do with a person's inherent self worth. Rather, I say, "that was a good choice/job/thinking/etc" or "I know that wasn't your best behaviour/thinking/job/etc. Let's try again." I don't believe in the notions of "being good" or "being bad", and especially not the reward or withholding of physical things (toys/food/etc) resulting thereof. Rather than saying "be good and I'll get you a candy. If you're bad you can't watch tv.", I say things like "I'm counting on you to show me you know the right way to behave. When you do good things, good things happen. When you do bad things, bad things happen." Praise for making the right decision is reward enough. I do not buy nor do I allow in my home any character brand merchandise (elmo, dora, hannah montana, etc etc etc) or talking/blinking/battery operated/plugin toys. I believe children can be perfectly content and well-developed with the benefit of neutral toys (i.e. blocks, skates, jump rope, hula hoop, chalk, crayon and paper, etc) Another strong belief of mine is never to lie. To a child, many times it's easier to lie, but it sets a terrible example and is unneccessarily stupid. Case in point: Santa Claus, the tooth faerie, the Easter bunny, etc. I will *never* tell my daughter an old fat guy comes down our chimney in the middle of the night, or that rabbits lay eggs all over the house, or that she's earned a payday because she's growing. When the time comes in a year or so, my daughter will also be home-schooled. My friends find major fault in this, and tell me often "but she'll have no friends. She'll be a hermit. She won't learn as much. But you got to do it, you got to experience what school was like. How can you take that from her?" It's not *depriving* her of anything, yes I did always go to school outside the home...doesn't mean I need to repeat my mothers mistakes. I teach my daughter to spin things positively. For instance, instead of "don't go into the street", I tell her "stay in the yard." Or, instead of telling her "I don't like you. I don't want to hear that. Leave me alone." in a joking way (like my best friend does to her nephew), I say things like "How did you get so wonderful?" "What was good about today?" or "Do you know that pretty girl?" (in the mirror after washing her hands or brushing teeth) Our last issue of the day is, of course, the plate. I do not give my daughter any animal products as food, and I eat the same (we're vegan). Also, a strict rule in my home is that IF you have a "special treat", you only have ONE in a day. I've heard *SO* many say "you're depriving her of what she needs. People have to have meat to survive. People have to have milk for their bones." Her doctor has given her a stellar bill of health. Or they say "she's just a kid. If she wants ice cream she should have it." I don't believe in severe punishment, but I do believe in strict punishment. My daughter is placed on restriction for the remainder of the day if she chooses even once not to listen to me the first time, but I would never raise my voice or hand to her. So, in short, is my parenting style really as off-kilter as people make it out to be? What are your personal opinions?Many think home-schooling will clamshell a child into a corner. My daughter is exactly the opposite. The local parks and rec office publishes a quarterly brochure of over 100 community activities/classes (choir, painting, baseball, swimming, etc). Or to be more specific, High School Musical and Hannah Montana. I'm kinda late in asking this question. I watched High School Musical about two years ago, after everyone else did. At that time, everyone loved it and bought the books and the HSM merchandise. Then the general public came to hate High School Musical. (Same with Hannah Montana.) I think it's because a couple of people pointed out all the bad things about High School Musical, and how it was so cheesy, lame, etc. They told their opinions to their friends and posted them online and such. People would listen or read their opinions, and would think it was true. But they couldn't figure it out themselves. I think most people are followers in this world. They listen to other people's opinions and agree with them. Then, everything after that by Disney Channel was considered stupid or lame. Everyone would be critical. I thought of this today. My friend went to watch Hannah Montana: The Movie and said she loved it. She loved the songs and cried. Before the movie came out, she listened to "The Climb" and said, "I LOVE THIS SONG!" But on Facebook, she took this quiz and it said her 2009 song was "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus, and she wrote, "Bleh" on it. But sometimes i wonder if people are just trying to be cool saying they hate her.... she is HUGE, i mean really huge, sells out concerts millionns and millions of people go to them, watch her movies, buy her merchandise, all ages. Yes, we know her voice isnt the greatest.. but it is unique in its own way. its rough... but she can still hit some pretty high notes even though its rocky. and its still different and unique... and she's very popular. I noticed on her youtube videos a lot of negative stuff as well. I think people comment the video's rudely just to be cool... becuz.. if they really didnt like her, why would they be on her video's to begin with? Like.. I really hate Beyonce... so i would never go and watch her videos. why waste my time watching a video that pisses me off or makes me angry? When i was in high school Britney spears was HUGE. but everyone in the hallways, and gossip, all said bad things about her. how much is to much merchandising.they have hannah montana,clothing,wall clocks,note books,book sacks,blankets,trick or treat bags,jewelry,toys,and lots ot other merchandise.how can one celebrity have their picture on almost everything possible.i think she has more merchandise than elvis,and sponge bob.gene simmons from kiss said he wants to put kiss's image on everything possible,but i think she even has him beat.do you think hannah montana has way to much merchandicse,especially for someone so young. more

Does anyone else get irritated about whats happening to Disney! Now the whole Disney Channel- Disney shop and disney Merchandise is all Hannah Monatna and HSM! What happened to the feel good, proper Disney Classics? Like Little mermaid, and Alladin. A few years ago the Disney channel was great, but now i feel its filled with Far fetched, irritating american rubbish. ( Hannah Montana) and also the thing is, these girls arn't even good role models, all you have to do is type in Miley Cyrus or Vannessa hudgens name into google or youtube, and it comes up with horrible photos of them half naked. I mean what is that teaching yound children that look up too these stars. My fave singer is Jordan Pruitt. And personally I think she has more talent than Miley Cyrus. She hasn't taken any weird pictures of herself, and in short, hasn't done anything crazy. Her voice is really good too! I know that Miley Cyrus is probably more famous just because of her show, her Hannah Montana alter-ego, all her merchandise, all that drama with the JoBros, and stuff. my 26 year old boyfriend watches Hannah Montana and other childrens programs. we have no kids. he records them on our DVR and watches them when he gets the chance. some of the other shows he likes are Doug, Rugrats, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Cory in the House, Drake and Josh, Hey Arnold, Batman, Even Stevens, Kim Possible, Pete and Pete, Fairly Odd Parents, and Sponge Bob Square Pants, Saved by the Bell. i'm no so much concerned with those shows as i am with him watching Hannah Montana. maybe i'm over reacting. i mean he dosen't buy her merchandise and he hates the music (he said "See You Again" was catchy) and he never talks about it. he just watches it and laughs and thats it. it's genuine laughter, not his fake "work laugh" as it's called and i haven't found any Hannah/Miley sites on the computer that he's visited. i asked him what he thought of Miley and he said she was funny and reminded him of I Love Lucy, which he watched growing up. i asked if he thought she was pretty and he said "she's cute", then i asked him if it was sexual and he gave me this mean look like he couldn't believe i'd go there. he didn't really try to defend himself after i said that, and for some reason i took comfort in the fact he didn't get all defensive and freak out, i would have been suspicious if he had i think. his favorite character is the dark haired kid i think his name is Oliver. he said Oliver reminds him of himself at that age and all the shows remind him of when he was a kid and all the mischief he got into. i can vouche, he's got some pretty entertaining stories. pulling a table cloth of the table in the teachers lounge and painting the back of someone's house pretending he was in a def leppard music video. i just find it odd, that someone like him would do something so innocent. he keeps up with current events, politics, sports, reads news papers, books, comic books, and watches the History Channel almost 24/7, and his music collection is astounding, over 10 thousand songs on his iPod and there's very few bands he dosen't know and his DVD collection is over 300 DVDs he knows a lot about film and music and just general knowledge. then he goes and watches these kid shows and laughs at them. am i blowing this out of proportion or is this weird. i know he watches more kid shows than Hannah Montana but it's the Hannah Montana that bothers me the most. he records everything he watches on DVR and saves them, and he records more than kid shows, he saves all the Dave Letterman and Regis and Kelly's and History Channel documentaries and everything else he watches on there. saves them on the computer to watch later. he said he wanted a "History of Pop Culture Library" on his desktop. myabe i'm over reacting. is this normal? Grown men watching shows aimed at kids and preteens. more
