Open Question: Can I double a sweet and sour dipping sauce recipe?

I have a simple recipe off the web for homemade sweet and sour sauce to go with egg rolls. I made it once and saw how little there was then tripled it to end up with a quad batch. I foolishly didn't taste-test the first small batch and then when I put both together tasted it and it taste off from what the restaurants make. I'm wondering if it's due to tripling the recipe or just the recipe itself. It uses Rice wine vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, soy sauce, corn starch, and water. I added a pinch of red pepper to it like reviewer suggested. I tripled all ingredients equally. I'm sure I could just make a single batch and go from there but I'm curious if this is one of those recipes you just shouldn't double. Seems no matter where I look online I can't find a list of ingredients that don't "double" well, or in my case "triple."I've tried to find this dipping sauce in the stores but I find only one and it looks NOTHING like the stuff in the "americanized" chinese food places, it's far too red. If I could find a brand/variety like the stuff I get when I order egg rolls I'd likely rather buy it than make it just for convience sake. more

Voting Question: Anyone have experience with the ETG test for alcohol? I'm nervous about failing and need opinions.?

First of all, I'm in the position to be tested because of a DWI back in May of 08, when I was court ordered to abstain from alcohol. Besides this stupid situation (that I OBVIOUSLY put myself in), I honestly don't drink at all. EVER. I drank about 4 bottles of wine over this last weekend while doing a LOT of celebrating with family I haven't visited with in 4 years, and just found out that I have to take an ETG test on Thursday. It will have been 4 solid days with no alcohol at all when I test, but the info I'm reading online is inconsistent. Some sites say 3-5 days, some say up to 80 hours, and still others say I'd probably be fine after 48 hours sober. I don't typically drink at ALL. I stopped after getting a big wake up call when I got a DWI almost 2 years ago. I didn't know that the test went back that far, and if I'd known I wouldn't have drank... it's not normally part of how I live my life any more, and yet here I am now freaking out over yet ANOTHER stupid situation I inadvertently put myself in because of alcohol. I know I made a stupid decision when I drank. No need to bash me, as I am quite aware of how idiotic it was to risk my freedom. I'm officially not touching alcohol again, ever. more

I'm 29 and 1/2 and I f'ing don't LIKE IT. I don't LIKE not being in my early 20's anymore. I don't like that I live in the f'ing hood because I'm poor and I never finished college. It took me 9 GOD**** MONTHS to find a job down here in L.A., I blew through all my savings and some of my poor, loving parents money (who are nearly in their 70's!...) just trying to survive, and trying to escape from my problems playing god**** video games and drinking. I can stop drinking for about 2 days max, then I have to get some wine or something. I'm overweight, I have a gym membership but I can't make myself go for more than a couple days in a row at a time. I f'ing hate myself, and I miss who I used to be. I got laid all the time, I had friends, my car worked fine, I had a good job, I f'ing just hate the world right now. I've had suicidal thoughts, and even thoughts about those who have wronged me or hurt me emotionally. Like if I'm going down I'm taking them with me kind of thing (only thoughts, don't freak out). The world isn't fair and I f'ing know that. I've always known it. I grew up poor, I had a good education, loving parents, but I think during my whole early life everyone looked at me like I had such promise, and now I can't stand to see the look in my mother's eyes when I tell her I'm quitting my job or I'm moving again, or my GF and I broke up, or .. so many things. So many things are wrong right now. I just want to cry. What the F is the point of life? What THE F IS THE POINT???!!! To have kids, to have a family, so you can spend the rest of your life raising them so they can have a chance at maybe possibly making it in a greedy, cruel, unfair F'd up corrupt world? Or to just live and not have kids? So you just do what you want for the rest of your days and then die and that's it? We all know this is it, we ALL know, deep down, that religion is BULL****! Even the most religious know it deep down in their mind, but they think with their heart, because they're so freaked out by the concept that we all die and we're just animals, and after we die that's F'ING IT. No heaven, No hell, No God, No afterlife, No reuniting with loved ones, IT'S BULL**** people and you F'ing know it. But I guess the question is, is it better to know that and live your days knowing that? Or better to fool yourself into buying the whole idea, and then if it is a lie, who the f cares? Cause you'll be dead anyway, so...maybe they've got the right idea after all! Please if you know any good online outlets for help for depression let me know, I know this sounds like the rant of a madman, but I'm actually a very sane, educated, professional guy. My dad is always putting my mom down in front of me and my brother, about every single thing she does. -Anything she buys he checks the online account to figure out what it was -Yells at her in public places because she isn't "doing something right" -says she doesnt do the dumbest things right, like she "doesnt know how to load a dishwasher" -gets mad whenever she has a couple glasses of wine, or one beer and says she acts like she is two years old -treats her like a kid even though shes a full grown adult (FYI my mom works at the hospital at nights, so her schedule is hectic and sleeping patterns way off) Im on my moms side in that something needs to be done for him to stop doing stuff like this, degrading her and treating her like a kid. what should I/she/he do?? because im sick and tired of hearing my dad constantly b***h!!!! more

Ok so I posted last night..appreciate the comments. Here's what I said.... I am a 27 yr old gay man and I've been seeing this married man for the last 3 yrs...now it's basically just for sex but I sorta do have feelings for the guy...but I just found out 3 weeks ago basically he's just a big liar....should I be shocked? Here's the thing.... He is a very private man. He won't even call me from a unblocked number....doesn't really talk about his family or his life much. Just basically know he works in the wine business, has 3 kids (12 -16) and that's basically it. It's just physical stuff we do so I guess he really doesn't owe me anything but I do like the man....BUT I had a client of mine email me with a link to his profile on his work site. I went on it and was just looking around and found my guys pic and profile....his name is completely different than what I thought and he's not even in the wine business...hes a attorney. I googled his name just to see what comes up...found a thing online for his oldest son who is a hockey player and he is 20...not 16 like he recently told me. I even found his wifes work website....she works in the same building as him. Needless to say I was ticked off...my grandmother passed away almost 2 weeks ago and I emailed him and told him what happened and that I wanted to see him (even though I was still sorta pissed). I just needed to be with someone in a sexual way to help my saddness over my grandma...he did not respond till just 4 days ago and all his email said was "sorry in Columbus OH..be back on Saturday.". Not even acknowledging my grandma and saying sorry to hear that or anything.....so now I am just at a point where I want to tell him to F off and just email his wife and tell her Ive been seeing him for 3 yrs and that he used a fake name/life. He told me I was the only guy but I just don't believe that now...I suspect he's probably sleeping with other men too. It's just hard because yes, I was in the wrong...I knew he was married. I should have stayed away and I guess the bottom line is, he doesn't owe me anything. We aren't really a couple. But im still hurt and upset and feel used and stupid....please help. What should I do? I've been going back and forth and im at the point now where I just want to tell his wife....I know it's going to hurt her and maybe it's wrong for me to feel this way, but I don't care. He always gets undressed in my office and then comes in my bedroom (y I dunno. He always does that) do what we normally do but in the middle be like "I gotta use the bathroom..b right back..." go out, in the office, grab his clothes and just throw them in the shower, turn the water on and go back in the bedroom and confront him and tell him to leave now...he'll have no choice but to put his wet clothes on then go home to his wife....childish I know but yet it's harmless and a way to just make him realize how much of a piece of sh*t he is....then email the wife. Or should I just not do that, maybe just email him and show him his profile/pic I found and tell him im telling his wife or do I just not tell him and just email the wife? I really don't want to call her. O and someone said in my other post to have proof...I do. I've saved all his emails and I even have a voicemail on my phone with him saying "hey it's Brian (fake name) ect...". Voting Question: What causes my wifes terrible breath odor?

Any biochemists out there that might explain this. My wife is Asian and has that enzyme deficiency that causes her to turn beet red after drinking wine. Ac0cording to what I have read online, the enzyme deficiency actually causes an excess buildup of acetaldehyde in her system. Now when she eats raw garlic on foods at meals where she also drinks wine, soon afterward she develops a terrible breath odor, much worse than just plain garlic breath (this is even after brushing her teeth and using a mouthwash). I read that acetaldehyde is a powerful bonding agent for sulfur dioxide. Since garlic contains allicin which is a sulfur compound, I think when she digests the garlic, the sulfur dioxide that is produced in her stomach chemically bonds with the acetaldehyde which the body attempts to eliminate through the lungs, kidneys and skin. Hence when she breathes, the air around her is filled with the sulfur dioxide bonded with the acetaldehyde producing this odor similar to rotten eggs. Does this seem like a reasonable hypothesis for her apparent bad breath? I'm not a scientist so this scenario is what I pieced together by researching how garlic gets it smell and the enzyme condition my wife has. But I'd like to have some expert advice on this. more

I drank about a bottle of wine. I'm a lightweight so that really knocked me for a loop. I'm fairly depressed lately, so I decided to drink last night. Now, I don't necessarily have a hangover, but my heart is racing and my hands are shaking really bad. I can't stand it. Do you think I should rest, or try to exercise? I really feel awful. The shaking and fast heartbeat is stressing me out. Oh, I also have myself in a mess with someone I've been talking to online for several months. He's crazy about me and wants to meet me in person. I told him o.k. but I think we should talk on the phone first. He's not coming here for months because he lives over a thousand miles away, but now I think talking to him on the phone is not a good idea. Resolved Question: How much do hotel front desk clerks make?

I have an interview today and Im dreading the question "And what type of salary are you looking for?" Its for a front desk position at this very nice hotel, its not a chain but its waterfront and pretty upscale, just to give you an idea they offer each guest a complimentary bottle of wine upon their arrival and their rooms are really condominiums with 2 floors and they are not cheap. I'll have to travel about 20-25min. and pay for parking. I'll have my associates degree in business this spring and I have 2 years office experience yet no hotel experience. Resolved Question: Anybody seen "the Union"?

So my friend told me about this documentary about marijuana called the union: the business behind getting high. I thought it was interesting so i googled it and found it on google videos for free. It was fascinating! As a straight-a honors and AP student, I had kind of written off marijuana as something for the lazy kids who fail all of their classes and don't do anything. That documentary made me realize that it's actually not all that bad. It's actually kind of good. It doesn't cause brain damage or cancer, nor does it make people do anything violent. This makes it better than most drugs, including alcohol and tobacco. I've never touched drugs or tobacco in my life, and I've never had more than a sip of my dads wine, but when that movie was over, I wanted a joint. It sparked an interest in marijuana for me and I've been doing a little research online, and I learned that there is a type of Marijuana called sativa (I think I spelled that right) that actually makes you focus and improves you senses, as opposed to indica, which is what most people think of as weed. You know, lazy stoners that smoke weed and then pass out on the couch or watch cartoons or what have you. Not to mention, legalizing the plan would take $14 billion a year from the US budget, plus anything we get from taxing legal marijuana as much or more than we tax tobacco. We could put that money to something much more useful. So anywho, I was wondering what you all who had seen it, or are going to go on google video right now and watch it, think about the whole thing. Do you smoke weed? Do you do any other drugs? Would you smoke weed if it were legal? Why or why not? Are you for legalization or prohibition? et cetera. Please only post intelligent things, I don't want a bunch of idiots saying any crap one way or the other. more

Resolved Question: Can anybody recommend a good reusable cork for resealing wine?

I use a nitrogen/argon mixture to prevent oxidation for bottles of wine I don't want to finish in one sitting, which works great, but I'm stuck trying to figure out how to reseal the wine afterwards. The same cork inverted works somewhat temporarily, but what I'd really like is a reusable solution, something like The Corker: http://www.thecorker.com/ that I can order online and will fit any bottle. I'm about to go on a cruise for spring break and I have already encountered several unexpected costs (parking at the port, taxes, etc.). I'm wondering if anyone who has been on a cruise VERY RECENTLY could tell me about any more I can expect once I get on the ship. I know there are charges for excursions, souvenirs, special dining outside the freebie areas, and for soda. Also, does anyone remember the average price of cocktails, beer, and wine per serving? Resolved Question: Are there any effective herbal alternatives to drinking wine at night?

I am a single mom and full-time employee and FT student. I am in the habit of drinking 3 glasses of wine at night (never any more than that because then I feel it the next day-not good for all that I have to do everyday). The nightly wine helps me de-stress/unwind while still getting stuff done at night that needs to get done (making lunches, prepping for the next day, school assignments, etc..). I literally do not have time by the end of the day to exercise, meditate, or even take a long bubble bath. The wine is my excuse to do something for ME, while still taking care of business and being able to fall asleep quickly when I am all done. I have tried sleeping pills and melatonin-both make my heart race. I have valerian and it works a little but not as effective as wine. I would stick with the wine but I've put on a bit of weight and I am pretty health conscious. I know the daily wine cannot be good for my liver and has become a bad habit. Does anyone know of something else legal that I can pick up from Whole Foods or online that will relax me like wine? Thanks more

I have been married 5 years. For the past 2-3 years things haven't been perfect, but they've been ok enough. He recently came back from deployment which exacerbated every bad thing in our relationship. I'm in a situation where I am very stuck in a lease (even with the military clause, this is a complicated issue). So we live in 2 different states. Recently I noticed that he had some red flags in his online back account. First I noticed the dinners that would equate 2 people. I kept my mouth shut giving him the benefit of a doubt. I would see several of those, and then I saw a transaction for a Nail Salon. My husband is in no way metro. I still kept my mouth shut to see what else was going on. All of this stuff had been going on for about a month. And during that time he wouldn't call me much and found every excuse to get off the phone. Finally I picked his brain a little and he said that he isn't sure if he wants to be married to me. He wanted his space. So I let him be. He didn't call back for a week. During that week of no communication I had that really bad feeling. All I wanted to do was flip over all of the pictures of him. And sure enough I saw another bank transaction for Bath and Body works. Nothing came in the mail for me. After the week was up he finally called. And was giving me lines like "you make me a better person" and stuff like that. My friends told me he might be stringing me along because the girl on the side may not be completely available. I asked him yesterday if he had a girl on the side because based on his behavior and the sudden change in attitude about the marriage it would seem so. He said no. But he got close to a girl named Ashley. They had a lot in common, etc. but she moved away about a week ago (which is around the same time he started talking to me again. It's no doubt there was an emotional affair going on. But he swears that she and he were just friends. Guys... what do you think. Do you think he went all the way with this girl? He wined and dined her! Do you think he still talks to her? I can't seem to figure out if I'm warm or cool. I've researched it, taken online quizzes and i seem to be a bit of a contradiction. I am caucasian with blue eyes and medium brown hair. Every skin analysis I've taken tells me I'm cool and my veins are blue on my wrists. BUT, pink, berry or red eyeshadows look awful on me, and any kind of blue based lipcolor makes me look like a corpse (purples, wines, berries). Also, I look better in gold than silver. I can't see any obvious undertones on my skin and I never tan (only burn). Help me, please! more

ok so, we are looking at doing beer and wine only. and for toasting we will have champagne for the immediate family and wedding party only. everyone else can toast with either wine beer or soft drinks. we decided on this when our hall told us that champagne is the number loss of all their receptions. other notes.... -kegs are NOT allowed at our venue. only bottles or cans. -the guest list is 130 but id say only about 100 guests will be of age. and considering the cop who will be there to monitor im pretty sure no underage drinking will occur. -we live in ohio and in a county that is notorious for ridiculous sin tax and alchohol tax. havent talked to any liquer stores yet. im not sure how easy it will be to get a buy back agreement. i have done searches online and found a few calculators that might help but wanted to get some real opinions. thanks in advance. more

So I met this girl online; today marked our fourth date. A chat at a coffee shop, a night on the town where I live, a night on the town where she lives, and a walk around a nice out-of-the-way town that sells great wine. So I am trying to find out how, and when you can go online. I asked at Game Stop, and the guy told me you just need to be level 6 and you can go online any time after that. You just go to the Logic Stone, and the command will show up for Georama. There is no point that you need to be in the story to go online, just be above level 6. Resolved Question: Would Ultrasound Tech Withhold That I'm Pregnant?

I went to my doctor and told him I had a sensation in my upper abdomen as well as a very emotional and short period. He ordered me a pelvic and abdomen ultrasound just to see whats up. I had the pelvic one today and they did an internal and external one. I had some very small suspicions that I might be pregnant due to the situation and I joked to the technician "if this is baby related i don't wanna know!" Well, at the end she told me that a doctor would look over the results and let my doctor know in 3 business days. She gave me no results whatsoever. She left me alone in the room to get dressed and left the ultrasound picture on the screen. I could see both of my ovaries head on and then an empty black hole above it a little to the right that she had pin pointed. I looked online and it looks similar to very early pregnancy. Im wondering, since she wouldn't tell me anything at all and is leaving it to the doctor, if an ultrasound tech would withhold from me if I was truly pregnant? I mean, what if I went home and had some wine??? Thanks for the insight! more
