Open Question: distilling spirits, how to get whisky, gin, vodka etc.?

I have been researching the distillation of spirits and am somewhat confused. The distillation process, if done correctly and carefully will produce virtually pure ethanol (alcohol) which is subsequently cut to 40% with water so as not to blow your head off. Several different recipes, for different types of liquor recommend fermenting different mashes, grape juice to produce brandy, potato to produce vodka, barley to produce whisky etc. As an experienced winemaker I can understand this, orange juice will produce orange wine since everything that goes into the mash stays in it all the way through to the bottle. The only thing removed is the dead yeast. What I don't understand is that if the resultant mash at say 14% is distilled the resulting alcohol will be somewhere near 100%. If that is the case then surely it is irrelevant what the original mash was made from, whether it was potato, grape, orange, rice, barley, malt, corn etc should make absolutely no difference if the alcohol resulting from the distillation process is nearly pure; surely it will be the same tasteless ethanol which will not carry the original flavour over from the mash. If this is true then why bother to use anything other than pure water and sugar to start with? Why bother to ferment (for example) orange juice if none of the orange flavour will make it to the finished product? Open Question: Looking for a connection between potential dairy and alcohol allergy/intolerance?

Hi there - I hope someone can help. I have been to my doctor about this and all they said was: "I don't believe in allergies, just be healthy" but it's obvious I have a problem. When I drink wine, beer and bizarrely, a spirit with a 'full fat' mixer or juice I get immense stomach cramps, my skin tingles, my mouth burns and I sometimes vomit and / or pass out. As a result I only drink spirits straight as they are the only thing I don't react to. When I consume too much dairy I get red blotchy skin, my mouth burns, my stomach really hurts (especially when I drink hot milk) and I sometimes get hyperactive (unusually with very strong cheese). I know the answer is: just stop eating them all, but I want to find out the root problem AND if they are connected. The answer is probably that I am just very unfortunate and should continue to not eat them, but I would like to find out what is wrong. Thanks in advance! NK more

Open Question: Olive Garden's Castello del Poggio vs. Castello del Poggio D'Asti. Difference?

I love wine but am by no means a heavy wine drinker or connoisseur. However, like many people, I love the Castello del Poggio (Provincia Di Pavia) for sale at Olive Garden but can't, for the life of me seem to be able to find the exact same thing elsewhere. If you do a Google search you will find Castello del Poggio D'Asti everywhere. However the label seems to differ between the one I can find at my local wine & spirits stores, and the one Olive Garden sells. Note the differences between the two bottles and perhaps someone can inform me if there's a taste difference between the two or why I can find one but not the other. Open Question: Name of wine/maker shown on Feb.25,2010 Today show toasting the Olympic spirits;specifically an apricot wine.?

My obstacle in viewing the video of the specific episode toasting the Olympics was I don't have the viewing parameters due to the type of computer I own.Therefore I can't find out the name of the wine and maker/label of what I'm guessing is a Canadian ice wine, I caught the opinions of the hosts of the show and the man who brought the wines saying how the apricot taste was apparent and all agreed to truly like that specific wine.I hope to receive the details. I'm 29 and 1/2 and I f'ing don't LIKE IT. I don't LIKE not being in my early 20's anymore. I don't like that I live in the f'ing hood because I'm poor and I never finished college. It took me 9 GOD**** MONTHS to find a job down here in L.A., I blew through all my savings and some of my poor, loving parents money (who are nearly in their 70's!...) just trying to survive, and trying to escape from my problems playing god**** video games and drinking. I can stop drinking for about 2 days max, then I have to get some wine or something. I'm overweight, I have a gym membership but I can't make myself go for more than a couple days in a row at a time. I f'ing hate myself, and I miss who I used to be. I got laid all the time, I had friends, my car worked fine, I had a good job, I f'ing just hate the world right now. I've had suicidal thoughts, and even thoughts about those who have wronged me or hurt me emotionally. Like if I'm going down I'm taking them with me kind of thing (only thoughts, don't freak out). The world isn't fair and I f'ing know that. I've always known it. I grew up poor, I had a good education, loving parents, but I think during my whole early life everyone looked at me like I had such promise, and now I can't stand to see the look in my mother's eyes when I tell her I'm quitting my job or I'm moving again, or my GF and I broke up, or .. so many things. So many things are wrong right now. I just want to cry. What the F is the point of life? What THE F IS THE POINT???!!! To have kids, to have a family, so you can spend the rest of your life raising them so they can have a chance at maybe possibly making it in a greedy, cruel, unfair F'd up corrupt world? Or to just live and not have kids? So you just do what you want for the rest of your days and then die and that's it? We all know this is it, we ALL know, deep down, that religion is BULL****! Even the most religious know it deep down in their mind, but they think with their heart, because they're so freaked out by the concept that we all die and we're just animals, and after we die that's F'ING IT. No heaven, No hell, No God, No afterlife, No reuniting with loved ones, IT'S BULL**** people and you F'ing know it. But I guess the question is, is it better to know that and live your days knowing that? Or better to fool yourself into buying the whole idea, and then if it is a lie, who the f cares? Cause you'll be dead anyway, so...maybe they've got the right idea after all! why is the main miracle in the modern westernized church being forced to the floor? I get that it happens allot, but there is no reference in the bible about this behavior, at all. I started rationalizing it as blood leaving the head, because people stood for too long. but it recently happend to a good friend of mine, and he walked up to the front was knocked down, tried to stand up again, and got knocked down. he didnt understand it, didnt get any spiritual direction, just an experience. I just dont appreciate wine even a really expensive bottle. I do like champagne like Moet but dont drink that much. The only alcohol i like is white spirits especially vodka. This is going to be a very long story cut as short as possible. Saturday night I went to a work friends house for a girls night in. Pizza and rose wine spritzers. The night was super fab up until her mum came home and we all started drinking white wine (A drink I dont normally have). The white wine was finished and the vodka came out but I refused it because at new year I got rather loud, danced like an idiot and my husband did not like it so I said i'd lay of spirits from then on. My friends mum went to bed and WHAM BAM thats the last I remember. I have no recollection of my life after 1am Sunday morning. Apparently I started drinking diet coke but then decided I didnt want it and poured it all over my friends floor. I then smashed a glass and held it as if I was going to hurt her with it. I then locked her out of her house for an hour, ate an apple from my bag and spat it all over her carpet!! I was taken home by a taxi. I threw my coat over his head whilst he was driving and snatched the glasses off his face! I found out all of this by another friend who contacted me the following day to see if I was ok. My hangover has lasted two days. I had vomited all over my house and my husband said he was looking into my face and shouting 'what have you taken' but it was if I had died because although I was looking at him there was no life in me or my eyes. The friends conservatory was practically trashed and she was so hysterical and traumatised after what I had done she refused to speak to anyone until today.; I am absolutely appauled at my behaviour and so upset that I could threaten or upset anyone in any way shape or form. This girl is like my sister and we are close (even though she is 12 years younger than me) Today I sent her and her mum some flowers to her home as she had called in sick at work because of what had happened. We have eventually spoken this evening and i cant apologise enough for the way I have behaved and we will sort it out in time but not before I make it up to her and her family. To be honest, if I had been told i'd murdered somebody I wouldnt have known any better and I would have believed them - thats how bad I actually was! I have been drunk many times and ive been funny, merry, stupid and over the top but never ever violent or disrespectful to anyone. I take beta blockers and citralopam for severe post natal depression. Could these meds have interacted with the alcohol making it stronger or made my moods aggressive? Resolved Question: Why do Protestants read the Bible, but do not accept the truth?

Question: Why do all Bible reading Protestants, who profess their ways of obtaining salvation is the only correct method? When, it is distinctly written in the Gospels, that the only way, for the redemption and salvation of our souls for eternal life is by our acceptance of Baptism, Absolution of sins and the eating of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Sacrament of Baptism was made, for all the Jews and gentiles, when Jesus Christ said to His Disciples “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. ‘ Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. ‘ And behold I am with you always, until the end of age” Mat. 28, 18-20 The Sacrament of Reconciliation, was made to absolve our Sins, This Sacrament was created when Jesus Christ said “ Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. ‘And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them ‘ Receive the Holy Spirit, Whose sins you forgive are forgiven and those sins retain are retained” Jn 20, 21-23 Today, Catholics are absolved from their sins, when we disclose and repent all our sins, before the presence of the Catholic Priest. The Sacrament of the Eucharist was made for us to be in communion with Our Lord, Jesus. In His message before the crowd “ I am the living bread that came from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Jn 6, 48-51 Again He said “ Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise on the last day.” Jn 6, 54-56. Therefore on the last supper He took the bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to them, saying, “ This is my Body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me. And likewise took the cup of wine, after they had eaten , saying “ This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you” Lk 22, 19-20. Today, at every Mass throughout the World this same Sacrifice of bread and wine is made into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ as he commanded our Priest to perform. In light of what is written in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, why have all the Protestant denominations ignored these passages of the Bible and removed themselves from the only true way for Salvation of our souls? more

We have Daniel who resolved not to defile himself by eating the King's meat. Then we Jesus is saying that nothing outside a person can defile him. Are we to be very selective and judge the things that we feed into our body? (what we see and what music we listen to?) Is there a line between spiritual and secular for a christian? more

Resolved Question: What state has the worst alcohol laws?

I would certainly say my home state Pennsylvania. You cannot buy alcohol at a grocery or connivance store. You can only get 6 packs at restaurants. If you want a 24 pack (or 36) you must go to a beer distributor. Then if you want a different type of alcohol you have to go to a state run wine and spirits shop. Is that confusing enough for you? more
